How to Stop Leggings Rolling Down at the Waist

Few things are more irritating than pulling your waistband up every five minutes. The good news is that rolling is almost always caused by something specific and fixable — usually the fit, sometimes the fabric, occasionally how you are wearing them.

Why leggings roll down

The size is too small

This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and it is counterintuitive. People assume tighter means more secure. In fact, when leggings are too small the fabric across your hips is under tension and pulls the waistband down with it. The band has nowhere to sit.

If your leggings leave deep marks on your skin or feel like they are sliding down within minutes of putting them on, go up a size rather than down.

The waistband sits at the wrong height for your torso

A mid-rise legging on a long torso ends up sitting below the natural waist, on the widest part of the belly, where there is nothing to hold it. The same legging on a shorter torso sits above the waist and stays put.

If you have a longer torso, look for high-rise or high-waisted styles specifically. The band needs to sit at or above your natural waist — the narrowest point — so it has something to grip.

The waistband is too narrow

A thin waistband concentrates all the pressure into a narrow strip, which folds over. A wide band, roughly 3 to 5 inches, spreads that pressure and lies flat. Wide bands are one of the clearest quality signals in a legging.

The elastic has gone

Elastane loses its recovery over time, and heat is the main culprit. If a pair that used to stay put no longer does, the elastic is spent and no amount of adjusting will bring it back.

What to look for when buying

  • High-rise, if your torso is long or you want them for training
  • A wide waistband, ideally 3 inches or more
  • Seamless or compression knit rather than thin jersey — it holds its shape under movement
  • Elastane content around 15 to 25 percent. Much less and there is not enough recovery; much more and it can feel restrictive

Making the pairs you own last longer

Wash in cold water, and never put leggings in the dryer. Heat is what destroys elastane. Hang them to dry and they will hold their shape for far longer. Skip fabric softener too — it coats the fibres and reduces stretch recovery.
